Josh Wales ‘Watchful Eye’ Review with Baritone Ukulele
‘Watchful Eye’ by Josh Wales is a captivating acoustic masterpiece that showcases the songwriter’s exceptional talent on the baritone ukulele. The piece flows effortlessly, with a laid-back, dreamy ambiance.
The Baritone’s Versatility and Depth
The opening notes of ‘Watchful Eye’ quickly immerse the listener into a serene soundscape, highlighting the expressive potential of the baritone.
Reverberated fingerpicking captures the melancholic atmosphere of the song throughout, and the baritone ukulele is perfectly accompanied with layers of acoustic guitars and acoustic bass guitar in the chorus.
Featuring the Snail Electro Baritone
Josh plays a Snail gloss mahogany baritone SUB-M1 EQ with 35mm nut width, preamp and an under saddle pickup.
Snail delivers their laminate mahogany ukulele with gCEA tuning, which is unusual for a baritone. But don’t let it put you off! Here, the strings have been changed to the more traditional sounding DGBE, giving plenty of depth and deep low notes.
Josh recorded this track on a single large diaphragm condenser microphone to capture the brighter hues of the uke, and some subtle saturation effects were also used to add colour and tone.
The Story Behind the Song
“Watchful Eye is a story about two people being there for each other in some kind of apocalyptic other world. I first wrote this song when I was seventeen years old but came back to it ten years later to make some small tweaks and produce it professionally.
For example, I added the line ‘I was hopelessly chasing, chasing the wind. Now I'm hopefully changing’ to demonstrate that in the face of adversity and over time, it is possible to remain calm and reflective.
It also shows how I have changed over ten years, hopefully for the better!”

In Summary
‘Watchful Eye’ is a beautifully crafted piece that not only underscores Josh’s artistry but also elevates the baritone ukulele as a main contender on the acoustic music scene. A must-listen track for anyone seeking relaxation and mellow vibes.

Lyrics:
Keep a watchful eye on me
When the tide begin to freeze
I'll pick you up again
Because that is what we're for
Keep a watchful eye on me
When the tide begins to freeze
I'll put the sand back to the shore
Because that is what we're for
I love you baby, I'll love you daily
I was hopelessly chasing, chasing the wind
Now I'm hopefully changing
I love you baby, I'll love you daily
Some place or time I'm gonna get you there
I know you'll find your way out of nowhere
I know its out there somewhere
I know its out there somewhere
