Make your own music!

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, learning to build your own song sheets is a useful skill to have if you want to keep a personal record of your favourite tunes or simply share your music with others.

Let’s start from scratch and get going with your first ukulele song sheet!

1. Choose a song

The first step in creating a song sheet is to select the song you want to make into a written copy. It could be a popular hit, a classic tune, or your own original composition. Start with a song that genuinely inspires you and make sure you really know the melody, chords, and lyrics to start with.

2. Identify the chords

Listen closely to the song and find out the chords being played. Once you have recognized the chords used, write them down in the order they appear in the song.

Choose the chords you need from our Free Downloadable Chord Diagrams.

Simply copy and paste your chord charts across the top of your song sheet, underneath the title. Check out our example song sheet to see for yourself.

3. Line up the lyrics with the chords

Listen to the song carefully and write down the lyrics. It helps to break the song down into sections (verses, choruses, bridges) and make note of any key changes or recurring patterns.

Finally, line up the lyrics with the appropriate chords. Either by indicating chord changes above the lyrics or by placing them in brackets in the appropriate places.

4. Chords in brackets or chords over the lyrics?

The choice between placing chords over the lyrics or in brackets within the text is really a matter of personal preference and both methods have their own advantages.

Chords In Brackets

Placing chords within brackets reduces the need for additional vertical space above the lyrics, making the song sheet more compact.

This method can also give a cleaner visual appearance giving more accuracy as to where the chord changes are in relation to the lyrics.

Chords Over Lyrics

Chords over the lyrics clearly separate the chord symbols and lyrics, making it less likely for the reader to confuse the two.

Musicians can glance at the chord symbols while singing, which can be helpful for a quick reference during live performances.

The skill level of the musicians who will be using the song sheet is important. More experienced musicians might be comfortable with either format, but beginners may find the chords over the lyrics easier to work with.

Overall, it is all about personal preference. Maybe do some research first and ask your intended audience which style of song sheet they prefer.

5. Decide whether to include strum patterns

To add more depth to your ukulele song sheet, you may want to include strumming patterns or picking notations. You can use simple symbols like down arrows (↓) for downstrokes and up arrows (↑) for upstrokes for example. Personally, we prefer to let people decide on their own strum patterns, as they may want to add their own vibe to a particular song.

6. Fine-Tune and Double Check

Play your song through, review your song sheet for accuracy and refine any areas that need attention. Make sure the chords are correctly placed with the lyrics and that the timing is precise.

Top Tip

It is worth considering the layout and format of your song sheet to ensure that it is visually appealing and easy to read. Using larger font sizes for lyrics and chords and adding extra spaces between verses or sections helps with readability.

Save and Share

Once you are satisfied with your finished ukulele song sheet, it's time to share it with others. Print it out and save it digitally, you might even decide to upload it to an online community and inspire fellow ukulele players with your new creation!

Happy strumming 🙂
